Langenhuizen Recognized as One of Nation’s Top 100 Interns
- Third-Year Northwestern Student Becomes First HBS Intern to Receive Top 100 Honors
LITTLE CHUTE, WISCONSIN—Heartland Business Systems (HBS) is happy to announce that one of our exceptional interns, Sofie Langenhuizen, has been named a Top 100 Intern by WayUp + Yello. This prestigious recognition highlights Sofie's outstanding contributions and growth during her internship at HBS, where she has made a significant impact on both her team and clients.
Empowered by Mentorship and Support
Sofie's internship journey at HBS has been defined by strong mentorship and a supportive team environment. "I've had an amazing experience in my internship," Sofie shared. "The trust and support from my mentor, Uday Sidhu, and my team have allowed me to try new things and take my internship experience in the direction I want."
Sofie—a Data Science and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences major at Northwestern—also credits the many female role models she’s worked with at HBS. “I’ve been able to meet and work with really strong female role models on my team that have helped me identify some of the struggles of being a female IT professional and how we can best support each other.”
Real-World Projects and Technical Growth
Throughout her internship, Sofie has worked on a diverse range of projects spanning many different areas—particularly in Data Analytics, Data Engineering, and AI Engineering. She has been instrumental in developing Power BI reports to help HBS and its clients visualize and optimize their data. Sofie has also worked on Power Automate, Power Apps, and Azure SQL projects, automating tasks and creating efficient solutions for customers.
“I’ve also been able to use Azure AutoML to help create a model to predict better where pre-sales efforts should be focused to maximize return,” she said. “Throughout my entire internship, HBS has allowed me to be very hands-on, working on projects for real customers—even showcasing them and leading meetings with both customers and the internal HBS team.”
Personal and Professional Growth
Sofie credits her internship at HBS for helping her personal growth, in addition to her professional experience. "Thanks to my team’s collaboration and support, I’ve learned a lot of soft skills,” she said. “Including becoming comfortable asking questions and asking for help when needed. I’ve come to understand and appreciate that my technical skills are important, but being eager to learn and willing to jump in is just as critical to grow my skill set.”
Sofie also discovered a passion for artificial intelligence during her internship, which has given her clear direction for her studies and career aspirations. "Through the wide array of projects at HBS, I’ve learned that I want to continue working with AI as I move forward in my education and career."
Mentor’s Perspective
Sofie’s mentor, Uday, expressed his admiration for her rapid growth and contributions to the team. "We’ve seen Sofie grow from having little experience in BI to becoming a well-trusted member of our team in building out analytics solutions. She’s taken on full-time employee-level tasks like estimations, customer communications, and more."
Uday also highlighted Sofie’s expanding skill set, "Sofie has become a huge resource for HBS—supporting development work for our reporting efforts and leading initiatives on her own. We couldn’t be happier to have her on our team."
